Through our education and support services, lives in Greater Bridgeport are changed forever–women’s lives, their families’ lives, and the lives of our volunteers and supporters.

our mission

Our Mission

Educate a woman, educate a family

Mercy Learning Center of Bridgeport, Inc. (MLC) was formed in 1987 to provide free literacy and life skills education to low-income women in the greater Bridgeport area using a holistic approach within a compassionate, supportive environment. MLC’s programs focus on empowering and providing dignity, economic self-sufficiency, and hope to their students. By educating women, MLC provides critical learning for its students to improve their skills and earning potential, creating a more solid future for themselves, their families, and their community. We warmly welcome women of all backgrounds, experiences, and identities to our center.

Shared Stories

mami's story

Mami Ngombabu, a student, mother, wife, and registered nurse, embodies the motto of Mercy Learning Center, which emphasizes the importance of educating women to educate families. She arrived in Bridgeport as a refugee from South Africa in 2001, fleeing the civil war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite limited English knowledge, Mami was determined to build a better life for her family, leaving behind her parents and siblings.
